If your holiday season is anything like mine, you’re probably surrounded with lots of loved ones who always seem to be hungry. But with so many events, you’re also likely to be short on time, too. No worries, I’ve got the perfect dish for you that will be a make-ahead lifesaver, while still wowing your ever-hungry crowds—crème brûlée French toast! French toast usually isn’t too difficult to make but when you’re trying to feed a large group, it can take some time to cook each batch. But with this crème brûlée French toast recipe, you bake it all together like a casserole. It’s an incredibly easy dish that is best prepped the night before. In the morning all you need to do is to throw it in the oven and quickly brûlée it before serving. Honestly, the delicious smell coming from the oven as it bakes will wake any sleepyheads and have them running toward the breakfast table.
The base for this dish mimics the custard in traditional crème brûlée—eggs, heavy cream, milk, and vanilla. The bread soaks up the luscious mixture and once baked, becomes wonderfully tender and creamy in the inside and toasty on the outside. The final nod to the decadent, classic dessert is the thin layer of torched sugar.
