This Friday, instead of featuring a fan of Safest Choice, we are showcasing a group of professionals that we are fans of.

Healthcare foodservice professional

In 1985 the U.S. Congress declared that the first week of October would be a national time to recognize the integral role that foodservice staff has in helping the employees and patients of healthcare facilities stay well-nourished and healthy. The Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF), the newly-formed professional society for healthcare food and nutrition professionals in self-operated facilities, is celebrating National Healthcare Foodservice Workers Week™ October 4-10, 2010.

AHF feels this week is an excellent opportunity to recognize and thank those dedicated individuals who provide food and nutrition services in healthcare. The importance of excellent nutrition has been established and documented, but it is even more critical to those individuals in healthcare facilities. That is why it is essential to recognize all those hard working individuals who make healthcare foodservice possible, from the dishwasher to the administrative leader.

Denisa Cate, President of AHF, summarized the importance of the role healthcare foodservice plays today. “Proper nutrition is a key factor in maintaining health and wellness,” she stated. “Maintaining dietary guidelines is even more critical when dealing with people who have compromised health. We rely on our foodservice professionals to deliver meals that meet specific dietary restrictions and also please the palate. They truly deserve our appreciation and thanks.”

Safest Choice would like to echo AHF’s sentiments and thank all foodservice professionals for their dedication and hard work. Safest Choice understands the vital role foodservice plays in healthcare, and appreciates all of the responsibilities that entails, much of which goes unseen.

You can demonstrate appreciation for the healthcare foodservice profession through special promotional materials from AHF. A customized collection of gifts was developed for healthcare facilities to commemorate the occasion and honor these valuable employees.

AHF is the only professional society dedicated to professionals and suppliers in the self-operated healthcare foodservice industry – those facilities who choose to keep their foodservice departments on staff, instead of outsourcing them to third-party contractors.

It is the preeminent professional society dedicated to advancing self-operated healthcare foodservice as industry best practice. AHF develops healthcare foodservice professionals, assuring food and nutrition services are valued as an essential contributor to the healthcare organization’s mission.
