It is very timely to begin my blog comments with recognition of National Registered Dietitian Day, today Wednesday, March 9, 2011.
Registered Dietitian Day
Registered Dietitian Day was created by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) to increase the awareness of Registered Dietitians as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services and to recognize RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives. Registered Dietitians are the most valuable and credible source of timely, science-based food and nutrition information.
Registered Dietitians are the food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. They have degrees in nutrition, dietetics, public health or a related field from well-respected, accredited colleges and universities. They have also completed an internship and passed an examination. Registered Dietitians use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes.
So, how fun is that? On my first blog I get to toot my own horn!
I haven’t talked with Jay personally yet, but will soon to gather information about him and his noble endeavor. It is easy to give friendly, general suggestions to anyone, but as a professional I am compelled to do a nutrition assessment that would address his beliefs about food, fitness and “dieting.” Also, any underlying medical conditions and vital statistics need to be considered and will impact my nutritional advice (we may or may not blog about this depending on how Jay feels). Every individual is so unique ─ physically and psychologically ─ that it is essential to treat the whole person. After all, it is the positive lifestyle change that Jay is looking for; I hear it clearly in his blog series.
NEXT WEEK: I’ll use the National Nutrition Month theme, “Eat Right with Color,” to help Jay choose a wider variety of fruits and veggies, and explain why this is important.
