Safest Choice Eggs Promotes Food Safety Awareness
As the end of September, National Food Safety Awareness Month, approaches the Safest Choice™ team wanted to recap an event we held to promote food safety and our pasteurized eggs. The event was planned before the nationwide 2010 egg recall, but it did make the timing to promote food safety fitting.
In the wake of the massive egg recall and salmonella outbreak, food safety has moved to the forefront of many consumers’ purchase decisions. To rally support during this time of heightened food safety awareness, Safest Choice™ hit the streets to spread the word about the availability of safe eggs in Chicago supermarkets and beyond. The Safest Choice™ team visited high-traffic areas in Chicago on Friday September 10, 2010 distributing coupons, product literature and giveaway items to inform passers-by about the option of safe eggs.
Starting bright and early at Union Station, morning commuters were greeted by the Eggman and given coupons for free safe eggs. Next, the team went to Daley Plaza, Millennium Park, Michigan Avenue and Navy Pier. Riding in a rickshaw with a man dressed as a giant egg, holding a bundle of white balloons stamped with the red circle ‘P’ drew a lot of attention along the way.
In addition to this event, we are hosting a Chicagoland “Safest Choice: Eggs Your Way!” recipe contest to remind consumers it’s safe to enjoy recipes that feature raw or gently-cooked eggs (such as traditional Caesar salad dressing, sunny-side up eggs, holiday eggnog, and sauces like hollandaise) only when using pasteurized eggs. The deadline for the contest is September 30, 2010. One grand prize winner will receive $1,000 and one-year’s supply of Safest Choice™ Pasteurized Eggs and two first place winners will receive $500 and one-year’s supply of Safest Choice™ Pasteurized Eggs.
